Mohenjo Daro (The Metropolitan Metropolis of 2500 BCE)
Mohenjo Daro means "Mound of the Dead. " It was one of the first big cities in the world. What makes it amazing isn't just that it's about 4,500 years old, but also its incredible city design. Long before we had modern sewage systems, the people of Mohenjo Daro built covered brick drains, tall brick houses, public baths, and streets laid out in a grid.
Key Highlights to Explore
The Buddhist Stupa and Citadel: Located at the highest part of the area, this stupa from the 2nd century CE provides a wide view of the old city ruins.
The Great Bath: A large, water-resistant pool made of bricks and sealed with natural tar. Historians think it was used for ceremonies to make people or places clean.
The Houses and Drainage System: If you walk along the old streets and look down, you’ll see brick channels made to take dirty water away from each house.
Mohenjo Daro Museum: This museum has old seals, clay pottery, weapons, and copies of important items (the real bronze statues of the Dancing Girl and the Priest-King are kept in national museums).
Kot Diji (Fortress of the Talpur Dynasty)
About 2 to 2. 5 hours east of Mohenjo Daro, near Khairpur, is Kot Diji, which has two interesting layers of history.
At the bottom is an old mound from around 3300 BCE, belonging to a culture called "Kot Dijian" that came before Mohenjo Daro. Standing 110 feet tall is the strong Kot Diji Fort (Fort Ahmadabad), which was built in the late 1700s by Mir Sohrab Khan Talpur to protect the area.
Key Highlights to Explore
The big walls and towers: The outer walls follow the shape of the hill and are made stronger with large round towers built to resist cannon shots.
Shahi Darwaza (Royal Gate): Big wooden doors with large iron spikes, made to prevent war elephants from breaking through.
Great Views: Go up to the highest walls to see wide views of the nearby date-palm fields and the desert.
Pro Tip: Start your day early at Mohenjo Daro to catch the soft morning light over the Citadel ruins before the midday heat hits, then head to Kot Diji in the late afternoon to catch the golden hour sun striking the fort’s high walls.
